When I hear the words "Japanese food" I tend to think of refined, delicate food of great intricacy and obsessive perfectionism.
Now this place does "Japanese Street Food" and I'm left wondering exactly what that might be.
It's a tiny space - I counted seven stools - and really is more a take away with limited sitting opportunities than a restaurant.
So tiny and LOUD. The night we were there the chef insisted on greeting all and sundry at full bore and then the place was full of some young hip urban types who were showing each other their latest hilarious Instagram
post also at top note so a chat with my wife was not really a shot on the board.
We ordered the chicken and the beef okonomiyaki. The chef is very good at "upselling". Did we want extra cheese? Extra noodles? Extra toppings? Miso soup? Ginger tea?
We went with extra noodles and tea.
The food arrived after a short wait on a paper plate and either looks interesting or like an accident, depending on your point of view.
There's a pancake on the bottom with an egg on that and noodles on that and then either the chicken or the beef in small pieces on top of that and than it's drizzled with sauces and seaweed flakes and who knows what else.
I was reminded a bit of an unrolled Bing Boy takeaway and a bit of a Blue and White Cafe AB.
The food was really tasty and full of flavours and certainly fitted the brief of juicy, messy, street food.
The ginger tea was really REALLY good.
BUT..... The thing was about the size of a bread and butter plate and for $10 probably didn't rate as "hearty". More a snack than a meal it seems to me.
Particularly when you can pop round to the food court and for the same money get a full bento box or a generous serve of grilled salmon with rice and miso soup
I'm sure there are little places like this all through Japan - tiny places that just serve one or two items and I 'm sure that there are people getting all nostalgic about this place. And as a spot for a quick bite it's pretty good.
