My wife and I travel the World extensively for months at a time, so tend to have realistic expectations of places we've eaten at, most being adequately good, yet not as great as claimed. Tonite we decided to find a nice place for our on-the-road Anniversary dinner, Tired from the day and equally tired searching for places to eat, we chose 'Shin' as it seemed OK and was close to where we were staying. We met the Owner Matsushita-san before they had oprned who told us there were 3, set meal levels to chose from including their quite good drinks. . We elected on the middle level set to be safe, but due to the language barrier, had no Idea what to expect. We were a little worried on what we would be served, but threw caution to the wind and arrived tonite as Shin's first customers. The first course immediately made our apprehensions evaporate as we were served the most fresh and exquisite sashimi w/ a complex salad w/ a kick-ass dressing, complementing each other so nicely. The one off addition to the sashimi were slices of smoked ham unlike any I've tasted anywhere and that clean fish vs. smoked meat juxtaposition was unexpected yet so uniquely tasty. That set the stage for the tempura course that sealed the deal, w/ tempura served as it should be, singular and immediately fried, unadulterated by anything else than a little salt and a complex dipping sauce concoction that was so good. After this, we were satiated and expected that the meal was finished. .. Boy, we were wrong, as suddenly Matsushita-san appeared w!/ a 3rd course of different tempura, Including a freah tempura oyster and scallop, plus a sweet and stuffed white potato. Now, we were getting concerned as our stomachs were getting awfully full, hoping this would be the end. Don't get me wrong... that tempura was as light and crisp as one could hope for and his culinary skill was so evident. . But, Matsushita-sa had more culinary revenge in store for us.... Our eyes popped when he appeared w/ a cookstove and a deep pan full of chicken, pork sausage, cabbage. Meatballs onion, tofu and fish cake in an outstanding broth. How the hell we going to consume this quantity of truly delicious food? It tasted so good that we rationalized that it would go down easy and settle our previous 3 courses. That worked for about 2/3 of the pan, but our end was coming fast! The hammer came down when Matsushita-san the brought a searing hot 'Japanese Roof Tile-like' hot plate with beautiful Soba, beef, pork and egg melange piled on it. At that point, we had surrendered and politely could consume only half of it, but we had fully succumbed to Matsushita-san's consistent culinary talents. Of course he had to administer the 'Coup de grace' by then offering us some of the most delicious Sake I have ever tasted in my life, just to make us forget we were about to die and go to heaven from this truly incredible meal. Matsushita-san not just makes his offerings unforgettable, he offers genuine Hospitality to his customers... He and Shin deserves this overly lengthy but honest review... It was well worth the effort! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
