We visited Subzero last Wednesday with our daughter in hopes for her to enjoy an ice cream during the hot weather although having various allergies (dairy, egg and fish) I asked a member of staff what ice creams were on offer that were allergen free and she looked shocked and unsure of how to respond. Another member of staff shook her head no and then explained how they serve sorbet. My daughter then chose a raspberry sorbet which the staff member used an ice cream scoop from within a tub that was filled with water and multiple scoops inside used to quickly dip previous ice cream off. She then asked if we would like any toppings, in which I asked if they were allergen free. She then asked another member of staff for advice who explained briefly that they couldn't guarantee the sprinkles would not have cross contamination ( I assumed from using a spoon to sprinkle over the top of customers ice creams). I then said yes to having sprinkles on top, not realising that she would turn the sorbet upside down and dip it into the sprinkle topping tray! (Next to various allergen toppings!) I then expressed my concerns over this and explained I did not realise this is what the member of staff meant by cross contamination. I then requested if we could have a new sorbet altogether due to severity of an allergy reaction after witnessing this. The member of staff providing the cross contamination advice then explained to our server how the scoop needs to be washed properly before used for an allergy/sorbet. (This is when I realised the first hadn't been cleaned efficiently). I then ordered myself and my partners ice cream and while waiting for ours to be made I firstly witnessed one member of staff using the same cup to sprinkle different topping onto other ice creams and then another member of staff put two birthday ice cream cakes on top of all the sorbet options and began to transfer scoops of dairy ice cream into and on top of the cakes inside the sorbet display freezers. I would not recommend visiting Subzero if you have any kind of allergy or intolerance due to the practices we witnessed. I did email Subzero on Wednesday but they have still not given the courtesy of a response.
