We booked a table for 3 Friday 24/7 at 9 while listening to Surrey Soul. I got a confirmation email from them. We got drinks and advised we were there showing the confirmation email. Someone called over a manager who said no problem I have a table for you over we went and were put next to the dj. No one came back caught the person who seated us eye for her to advise the kitchen closed at 9. When asked how we could book a table when it shut at 9 was met with a blank look. At that stage we left at went to the curry house. Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4 Price per person: £30–40

I visited The Bell Inn yesterday (28/06/26) after spending the afternoon at Hampton Court. Having read so many glowing reviews describing it as an award-winning gastropub, I arrived with genuinely high expectations. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. The pub itself is around a 10-minute walk from Hampton Court. During our visit the outside was covered in scaffolding and, once inside, the décor felt fairly plain and lacked the charm and atmosphere you would expect from a traditional riverside gastropub. The service was poor before we had even sat down. We waited over 10 minutes in the entrance to be seated while several members of staff walked past us without even acknowledging us. After asking the bar staff twice, we were simply told that someone would come over. Eventually, after a long walk in the heat, we told the waitress we would just take one of the many empty tables ourselves. Despite the restaurant being largely empty, she still had to “check availability” before allowing us to sit, which felt unnecessarily petty. Once seated we were given food menus but no drinks menu. Again, nobody came to take our order, so after waiting another 10 minutes I got up myself, poured water from the self-service dispenser and ordered both our drinks and meals directly at the bar. That isn’t the level of service I expect from a gastropub charging premium prices. The biggest disappointment, however, was the food. My wife ordered the roast beef (£24) while I ordered the fish and chips (£18). The food was acceptable, but nowhere near good enough to justify the prices. To make matters worse, the online menu advertised the fish and chips at £15, yet we were charged £18. What genuinely shocked me was the fish portion. It was much smaller than expected and looked substantially smaller than the fish shown in the pub’s own online photos. It genuinely gave the impression that only half a fillet had been served (see my photo). When I mentioned this to the waitress, I was simply told, “That’s how the fish is cut.” Having previously worked in gastropubs myself, I didn’t find that explanation convincing. Traditional fish and chips is normally served with a generous fillet and proper chunky chips, not skinny fries. I even pointed out that the pub’s own online photos show a much larger fish with proper chips, yet I was simply given the same explanation again. By this point we had completely lost interest in staying. We had originally planned to order dessert and coffee, but decided to leave instead. When I went to pay, I raised the issue once more with the bar staff and again received exactly the same explanation. Despite the disappointing service, an automatic 12.5% service charge (£7.55) had already been added to the bill. Nobody mentioned it or asked whether we were happy to pay it. Considering we had to wait to be seated, get up ourselves to order drinks, pour our own water and eventually pay at the bar, adding a service charge felt completely unjustified. Our bill came to £68 for one roast, one fish and chips, one soup, one pint and one Pepsi. Looking back at the receipt, the overall experience felt even poorer value for money. Overall, I simply don’t understand the hype surrounding this place. Between the slow and indifferent service, underwhelming food, disappointing portion sizes and premium prices, it fell well below expectations. There are far better pubs serving traditional Sunday roasts and fish and chips for less money and with much friendlier service. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning and cannot recommend it.
