There are few things more British than standing in a pub while convincing yourself you’re “just having something light”… and then ordering a fish the size of a small submarine. The fish and chips at The Boot is magnificent. The batter arrives wearing a deep golden tan and shatters with a crunch that deserves its own round of applause. Beneath it lies beautifully flaky fish that is moist, delicate and cooked to perfection. This is not fish and chips. This is fish and championships. The chips are exactly as the Almighty intended. Thick, gloriously fluffy in the middle, crisp on the outside, and piled into a metal cup with enough confidence to suggest they know they’re the stars of the supporting cast. The tartare sauce is superb, the minted mushy peas actually taste of peas (a surprisingly rare achievement), and every mouthful is an argument against counting calories. What I loved most is that nobody here feels the need to “reimagine” Britain’s favourite dish. No artisan gravel sprinkled over the plate. No edible smoke. No tiny portions arranged with tweezers. Just outstanding ingredients, cooked brilliantly and served generously. Then there are the staff. They have mastered that rare British art of making you feel as though you’ve been coming here every Sunday for the last twenty years, even if you’ve only just wandered in. Warm, welcoming, cheerful and effortlessly attentive without hovering over you every thirty seconds to ask whether “everything is alright” just as you’ve taken the largest mouthful imaginable. The Boot isn’t just serving great pub food. It’s preserving a national treasure, one perfectly battered fish at a time. I’ll definitely be back. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

Myself and my 3 daughters and son had sunday lunch today 05 October 2025 gemma and all the staff were wonderful really professional and courteous we really enjoyed our meal the food was exceptionally presented and generous portions well done to everyone at the boot inn we will be back again soon very appreciated family of 5 thankyou
