I came to Abbey Burger with a friend for drinks and food and had a very disappointing experience. We sat at the bar and were completely ignored by both bartenders for about six minutes. During that time, neither bartender acknowledged us, not even with a quick “I’ll be with you shortly.” The male bartender took another guest’s beer order, while the blonde female bartender checked out a customer and then proceeded to put away glasses. Despite having multiple opportunities to acknowledge us, neither made any effort to let us know we’d be helped shortly. It wasn’t until I specifically asked the blonde bartender if they were still serving that she finally acknowledged our presence. (Which she then informed me they were serving drinks but the kitchen was closed) I’ve worked in the service industry for over 10 years, so I understand that bartenders can get busy and that guests sometimes have to wait. However, basic hospitality starts with acknowledging people when they sit at the bar, especially when there were fewer than six people seated. A simple “We’ll be right with you” goes a long way. Instead, we were left sitting there while watching others receive prompt service. I also can’t ignore that every customer being helped while we waited was white, while my friend and I are African American. I’m not claiming this was outright racism, but the experience certainly felt discriminatory given that we were overlooked until we spoke up. Whether intentional or not, that’s how the interaction came across. I hope management addresses this, because no guest should be made to feel invisible when they walk into your establishment. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’m genuinely sorry that this was your experience with us. Being ignored when you sit down at the bar is frustrating, and you’re absolutely right that a simple acknowledgment goes a long way. Even when our team is busy, every guest deserves to be greeted and made to feel welcome. I’m especially disappointed to hear that the experience left you feeling overlooked because of your race. Whether that was anyone’s intention or not, the fact that you left feeling that way is upsetting, and it’s not the experience we want anyone to have in our restaurant. I’ll be speaking with our bartending team about what happened and reinforcing the importance of acknowledging every guest as soon as they arrive. Ate lunch at Abbey Burger Mt. Washington yesterday. The atmosphere and service were very friendly. Harry, the soup and dessert chef, came over to tell us about Friday’s option. The soup of the day, jambalaya bisque, was EXCELLENT. Our build-your-own burgers and the sides were delicious. If you like a large bar/pub atmosphere, be sure to check it out. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $50–100 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Bacon Cheeseburger, Fries, Cheeseburger and Fries, Beef Burger
