Fine dining...on a college campus! Norseman Restaurant is operated by the culinary department of Diablo Valley College (DVC) and staffed entirely by the students of its culinary arts program. It's located on the 2nd floor of the HSF building, near the student commons in the middle of the campus. This place is not very well known to many because of their limited business hours. I'd heard about them from friends who'd tried it before. They all had great things to say about the quality and price of their offerings. So on 03/13/2019, I came here with my friend Steve to check it out. We walked in at around 11:10 am and were greeted warmly by the staff. One of them seated us at a window table in the back. The place wasn't busy. The interior was brightly lit and clean. Despite some semblance of an office, they did their best to make it look like a restaurant environment. To add to the ambiance, soft music could be heard in the background. Our server was an older student named Romero. He was very personable. He gave us the rundown of the menu and got our drink order started. Steve and I both decided on the prix fixe lunch ($15.95). My order came with the following dishes: - Mushroom Chowder - Homemade Fresh Italian Cheese Plate - Seafood Cioppino with Grilled Bread - Chocolate Walnut Tart with Caramel Sauce A complementary appetizer (crostini with a spread made with melted cow milk cheese and corn) and a basket of rolls were brought to us before the soup course. I really liked the cheese on the crostini. It was made in-house and not too salty. The mushroom chowder was made with a medley of mushrooms and red potatoes. It was earthy and hearty. I loved the slightly chunky texture. The homemade cheese plate consisted of crescenza, mozzarella, and goat milk ricotta, plus assorted fruits, bacon marmalade, and a few crackers. Out of the three, I liked the crescenza the best. It was creamy and the flavor was delicate. The mozzarella was pretty good too. It was moist and soft. The bacon marmalade was ferociously delicious. It was a fantastic condiment to the cheeses. The base of the seafood cioppino was made with tomatoes, fennel, and onions. The taste was a bit overpowering due to the presence of fennel. The seafood, consisted of a small king crab leg, fish, scallop, prawns, clams, and mussels, were all fresh and succulent. The chocolate walnut tart was beautifully presented and a wonderful way to end the meal. The tart filling was rich and chocolaty but not overly sweet. The caramel sauce and lightly sweeten crème fraîche were the perfect condiments to the tart. Service we received was outstanding! Romero and his classmates really did a great job of making us feel welcomed. They were attentive, enthusiastic, and efficient. With tip (no tax since DVC is an educational institution), the total was just $40. It was a definite bargain! Everything exceeded my expectations from the food to the service. There were some minor misses but not noteworthy. I was glad to see these young men and women working hard towards a career in the culinary field. Who knows? Maybe someday we will see them working in top notch restaurants around the world. 5 stars all around. I will come back for sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: Steve and I came back for their African menu on 04/09/2019. I had the prix fixe lunch again and it featured peanut soup (meat-based soup with assorted veggies and chopped peanuts), African crispy shrimp (seared shrimp on cheese crisps w/ beet ricotta), Moroccan halibut (halibut fillet with Spanish rice, roasted potatoes & carrots), and almond financier cake w/blackberries and crème fraîche ice cream. Again, the food was terrific! Carissa was our server and she provided top-notch service. Another winner! BONUS MATERIAL: - Major credit cards accepted. - Menu changes weekly. - You can order items à la carte. - On-campus parking costs $3. I suggest you park in the residential areas nearby. You will need a walk after the meal! - They are open Tuesday to Thursday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm during fall and spring semester. The culinary program runs 12 weeks so try not to go late in the semester.
