This was one of the most shocking restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. First, I want to be clear that our actual waitress was wonderful. It was her first day, and she was kind, polite, and professional throughout the entire situation. None of this was her fault. The problem was another employee working the floor. From the moment we walked in, she was coughing constantly throughout the restaurant. Not a minor cough—a deep, heavy, mucus-filled cough that sounded severe. She wasn’t covering her mouth, wasn’t washing her hands, and was walking around touching tables, counters, food service areas, and customer items while continuously coughing. At one point, I personally watched her package a customer’s to-go order, cough directly into the open container, and then continue packing the food. I was horrified. The employee looked visibly ill as well—red, swollen nose, clearly sick, and in absolutely no condition to be handling food. As a pregnant woman, this immediately became a serious health concern for me. After witnessing this, we quietly and respectfully pulled our waitress aside and asked if we could cancel our food order for the items we haven’t received yet and simply pay for the items we had already received. She completely understood and agreed. That’s when everything exploded. The cook became extremely hostile, loudly arguing with us in front of the entire restaurant and insisting we pay for food we DIDN’T RECEIVE and we no longer felt safe eating. We explained that we were canceling because we had just watched an employee cough all over food preparation areas and even into another customer’s order. Instead of addressing the health concern, the cook created a scene. My husband eventually said we’d pay just to end the confrontation, but the cook continued yelling and ultimately told us to “just leave.” We again offered to pay our bill for at-least the items we did part take in (soda, and appetizer) to the waitress, and she told us it was okay and that we could go. What makes this even worse is that there were already signs of poor management and professionalism before this happened. The cook was openly speaking disrespectfully to our waitress over ticket orders. The sick employee also displayed terrible customer service. When I attempted to order chili listed on the menu, she rudely informed me they didn’t have it. When I asked for the soup of the day instead, they were out of that too, and she visibly rolled her eyes during the interaction. The food we did receive was disappointing as well. The salad consisted of shredded lettuce and large uncut tomatoes thrown on top. The biggest issue, however, was the complete disregard for basic food safety. If an employee is sick enough to be coughing nonstop throughout a restaurant, they should not be handling food. Watching someone cough into a customer’s to-go container and then seeing management become angry when customers are uncomfortable with that is unacceptable. We tried to handle the situation politely and privately. Instead, we were embarrassed, yelled at, and effectively kicked out for raising a legitimate health concern. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We went for breakfast in our favorite camping town of Shell Lake, WI. I have read all the reviews and decided to take a chance on this quaint restaurant. We have had success going here in the past, but about 4 years ago it changed hands and frankly I think any bad reviews came from locals who were venting that their beloved restaurant had gone away to new owners. Also nobody is perfect, you can't get all the meals according to your liking all the time. However that being said, here is my honest review of Shell Lake lunchbox. Our group entered the restaurant at approximately 9:00 am. There were 9 of us. Right away our server had water and coffee for those who wanted it. We had menus in hand immediately. She had to decipher between who was together on a check and what everyone wanted specifically. That is no easy task. She did it with a smile and accepted a few of our group joking with her. We probably waited about 15 to 20 mins for our food to arrive. Everyone was served. No one had to wait longer than that to receive their breakfast. All of us but one enjoyed their various breakfasts. Those who asked for crispy hash browns got it. For my part I got the buddy sandwich breakfast, it was very good and my has browns were crispy. There were only two complaints out of the 9, one minor, the other not so good. One of the guests ordered country fried steak which he says tasted like sausage not steak. His eggs were more runny than he liked (he asked for over medium). Overall it was a mediocre breakfast for him but he loved the gravy. The minor complaint was, the guest thought she had ordered the full breakfast meal and got the half order, however now she says she was happy for smaller portion because it was more than filling. Frankly there could have been miscommunication on that one, so I think primarily we had a wonderful dinning experience. Service was good. Food was good. Place was clean except women's bathroom toilet needs attention. Thank you Shell Lake Lunchbox. Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: $10–20 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
