Trivett Food Hall at Appalachian State University is truly a culinary adventure, and by “adventure,” I mean it feels like the chefs are rolling dice every morning to decide what the food will taste like. I walk in hungry and walk out questioning my life choices, my major, and sometimes my ability to trust again. The second you enter, you’re hit with a smell that can only be described as “mystery steam mixed with yesterday’s orange chicken and a whisper of chaos.” Every time I’m there I swear I catch a new scent, like Pokémon but worse. The food itself is an emotional rollercoaster. The chicken has two modes: “bouncy like a stress ball” and “crunchy like a fossil someone dug up and tried to rehydrate.” Pasta is either soup or cement—no in-between. The pizza? Looks normal, tastes like it’s been through something traumatic. The crust could double as a yoga block if you’re ever in need of one. Trying to get a drink is like participating in a tragic comedy. The machines are either completely empty, broken, or offering a single flavor nobody on earth has asked for, like “Mango Citrus Mystery Zero.” If you want Coke, too bad. You’re getting Syrup Water Surprise. Finding a seat in Trivett is a whole sport. You think you found an open table? Nice try. Somebody will teleport across the room and claim it before your hopeful little feet make it halfway there. You end up standing with your tray like a confused middle schooler wondering where your friends went. And the atmosphere how do I put this It’s like eating lunch inside a busy train station where everyone’s running late. The lights hum. The room buzzes. There is always one random spoon on the floor that nobody claims. But honestly, eating at Trivett is practically an App State initiation ritual. You haven’t truly become a Mountaineer until you’ve questioned your meal, your sanity, and the temperature of the room (which is always either Arctic Cold or Cafeteria Sauna). Would I go back? Yes, because my meal plan has me in a chokehold. Would I recommend it? Only if I secretly hate you.
