I found the experience to be a "wonderful" adventure, everything from the above to the cleanliness of the restrooms. The experience was 1st in every sense. Thank you!! Vegetarian options: The Roman artichokes are the "best item" I've ever eaten! I order them every time I dine in. The Otumi (sp?) pizza was divine! Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $30–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommendation for vegetarians: Highly recommend Vegetarian offerings: Large vegetarian selection

I really, really wanted to like this restaurant.  I was excited to try Vora Restaurant European out, given the hoopla in the paper - see link below - about this new restaurant and the new Italian chef from my hometown Milan, Giovanni D'Angelo who was running restaurants in Kansas City for 10 years before taking the reins of Vora's kitchen.  Wichita is in need to continue to expand the culinary experiences it offers to its residents who are growing their level of sophistication when it comes to food. Ambiance: A little on the boxy side, but it is a new building. Otherwise, it is modern and attractive without being too obnoxiously hip.  Reminds me of Belga in San Francisco so I give it 4 stars. Service: Cheery, professional, and still working on a few kinks.  The first time I went to Vora we just had drinks at the bar and an appetizer. The bartender was extremely professional and friendly.  Very flexible, he really helped her with tastings of the sparkling wines they have by the glass to make sure she got what she liked. Five stars. Which collapsed to two stars when the final pour was in a flute that was still soapy, clouding the wine, and making the wine undrinkable... The wait staff in the main room is also very good. Five stars. And then followed a two star experience: I thought it was weird I asked for a glass of Barbera - a nice Northern Italian wine from Piedmont at $8. Server comes back with a red, I taste and it is a sparkling sweet wine (like a Lambrusco? Whoa and yikes!). So the manager stops by and asks the usual "everything OK?", and I say to please replace the wine with the Barbera I asked.  He comes back saying" "We don't have Barbera by the glass so I brought you a glass of Portelli, it is a Sicilian red.  I know what it is because, unlike him, I actually looked at the wine list. So, first, I know they have Barbera by the glass so I looked at him confused and I say, "Why don't you bring me the list? I am pretty sure you have a Barbera by the glass." He disappears and comes back with the right glass and profused apologies. Second, why propose a Sicilian red for $10 when the list also has a way more comparable Nebbiolo, also from Piedmont for $10? Sicily is 1,000 miles to the south and the wines there are completely different than Piedmont wines... I don't mean to sound like a snob, but wait, guess I am...   These are not fatal flaws and can be fixed (they must be fixed), just know your wine list, communicate properly with the bar tenders when serving drinks at the table, and don't assume that the client is as ignorant as you are on matters of enology. Get a sommelier if needed. Food: When I went the first time at the bar, I ordered the meatball appetizer, and it was yummy.  Enough to make me come back for a full dinner experience. Now; I know that Vora is called a European restaurant and not an Italian restaurant, but with a chef from Milan I was hoping to see a wider veriety of pasta dishes, and something more authentic than what is being offered. They have a) gnocchi, b) fettuccine ai quattro formaggi (4 cheeses) and c) lasagna.  That's it.  And the fettuccine can be augmented with a chicken breast, sauteed shrimp, salmon etc.  Totally stuck in the 80s and 90s American Italian style from NYC. A protein filet cut up in slices on a bed of linguini (or like in this case fettuccine). I stayed the heck away and ordered a meat entree.  So I ordered the not cheap for Wichita Pork Ossobuco ($29!) with mashers, and she ordered the veal with mushrooms and polenta (a corn based meal with the consistency of mashers from Northern Italy, where we are from). The osso buco was good, I enjoyed it, and the mashers were... yanno, mashed potatoes.  In other words, we are in the midwest, meat and potato land, and the new thing in town is feeding me meat and potato...  For $29 bucks... Meh, I don't see the value. Her veal was also quite good, but we could not really taste the mushrooms. The polenta was left on the plate. Lumpy and too much cheese in it. Pass. So I went back the next week as I was back in town with my CEO who is from LA.  I went for the Barbera by the glass again, and no issues there - yay.  He ordered a salad with salmon.  If you expect some nice Nicoise equivalent with chunks of salmon instead of poached tuna, you are going to be disappointed.  Here comes the 1980s salmon filet sliced up and deposited on top of the salad... Hey, at least he enjoyed it. I had the mussels, and they were really NOT good. Quite inedible actually.  The broth was very watery and there was no flavor at all. Hard to screw up a dish like that. I am so sorry to be so harsh, but it was horrible. Stay away from the mussels. Then we split a pizza Margherita, which at $12 is quite reasonably priced.  It was OK, again I was expecting something very good, instead it was just OK. Piatto down the street is much better. kansas.com/entertainment…
