Today my wife, my family, and I went to Zio’s Pizza in downtown Omaha for lunch. What happened while we were there bothered us enough that I feel it needs to be shared. A gentleman came into the restaurant who appeared to possibly be homeless or going through a difficult time. I do not know his story, and I am not going to pretend that I do. He asked about the prices of a couple of items, was seated, ordered food, and began eating. Later, the manager, Jeff, came in. When he saw the gentleman sitting there, his demeanor immediately appeared to change. He went to the man’s table and asked if he was ready to check out. The gentleman said yes and asked what he owed. He was told his total was around $8. He reached into his pocket, pulled out several one dollar bills, and began counting them. Before he could even finish, Jeff told him he did not have enough money and told him he needed to leave. The gentleman asked if he could at least take the food he had already been eating with him. He was told no. The food was taken from the table, thrown into the trash, and the gentleman was told to leave. Watching this happen in front of my wife and family was heartbreaking. We decided we were going to pay for his meal, but by that point he had already been put out of the restaurant. We gave him the pizza we had left over instead. His gratitude over something so simple was something I will not forget. Afterward, Jeff came to our table and explained why he handled the situation the way he did. I understand that businesses in downtown areas may regularly deal with difficult situations involving homelessness, people unable to pay, or individuals coming into their establishments. I understand that a restaurant has to have policies, protect its business, and deal with situations that customers may know nothing about. But none of that removes the responsibility to treat another human being with dignity. I told Jeff that if the food was going into the trash anyway, why not simply let the man take it? My wife and I have traveled to parts of the world where we have seen poverty and living conditions that are difficult to describe. We have spent a significant part of our lives trying to help people who are struggling. Maybe that is why watching this hit us so hard. This review is not about whether a restaurant has the right to require someone to pay for their food. Of course it does. It is about how we treat people when they are down. There was a way to handle this quietly. There was a way to pull the gentleman aside. There was a way to ask how much money he had. There was a way to find out if another customer might be willing to cover the difference. There was even a way to tell him he needed to leave while still allowing him to walk out with his dignity intact. Instead, from what we witnessed, a man who appeared to have very little was embarrassed in front of an entire restaurant, his partially eaten food was thrown away, and he was sent outside. That is the part I cannot understand. You never know someone’s story. You do not know if the person standing in front of you lost his job, lost his family, is battling mental illness, slept outside the night before, or simply made a lifetime of bad decisions. None of those things determine whether he deserves basic human dignity. Policies matter. Money matters. Businesses have to survive. But humanity matters too. Sometimes the measure of who we are is not how we treat the people who can do something for us. It is how we treat the person who seemingly has nothing to offer us in return. I sincerely hope Zio’s Pizza leadership takes a serious look at what happened today, not simply from the standpoint of restaurant policy, but from the standpoint of compassion, dignity, and how employees and managers handle vulnerable people. That gentleman may forget what he ate today. I doubt he will forget how he was made to feel. And neither will my family. Food: 3 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Order type: Dine in

Hi Chris, sorry to hear about this for you and your family. Not certain if it was handled correctly or not. We do unfortunatly get random homeless in this restaurant. We’ve learned when we do help them out occasionally it finds away for them to come in repeatedly. Sometimes people feel sorry for them and some customers complain how can we can let them in and beg from customers. We cannot win. I’ll speak to the managment however and make sure we handle the correct way in the future. Again, sorry for your experience. Zios Pizza.

Went in at 3:30pm, the place was empty. I understand that pizza oven create heat, but I don't enjoy sweating while I am sitting waiting for my food. The pizza was, okay-ish. The sauce basically tasted like tomato flavored water which made the crust underneath soggy. Really disappointed that I wasted money on that experience.
