I am a fan of several types of Ethnic Cuisine, be it Greek food with it's Spanokopita, Souvlaki, Gyros, Baklava, etc, good German wursts and sauerkraul, Korean barbecue, Chinese sweet and sour pork, Polish golabki and pierogi, Cajun jambalaya, or good old American burgers and hot dogs, but my two favorite types of food would be Mexican and Italian, And while I can appreciate a small batch bourbon or a single-malt scotch, since that glorious day in 1988 when I stumbled into Stoudt's Beer Hall in Adamstown PA and discovered brewmistress Carol's amazing Fat Dog Stout and other handcrafted libations, craft beer has been my beverage of choice. So to have a restaurant close by that specializes in Mexican AND Italian food and makes their own beer - this would be a dream come true . . . if they did it right. And Mexitaly does get it right: very good Mexican Food, Italian Food, and craft beer made on premises.
My most reent visit was on Cinco de Mayo, so I stayed on the Mexican side of the menu and had the steak quesadilla with a side of mexican rice and both were very good. On previous visits I had an excellent burrito, and from the Italian side of the menu, the brick oven pizza and an Italian salad, both of which were quite satisfying.
As for the beer, since it was lunch time I went with something on the lighter side and started with the Hefeweizen, which was quite tasty and I could definitely pick up on the banana and clove notes. The very helpful barmaid offered samples of any of the 8 or so offerings, so before my second beer I sampled the just-tapped "Hawaiian Hefeweizen" and the special Cinco de Mayo offering, a Mole Stout with some type of hot pepper (forget if it was Jalapeno, Habenero, or something else), and despite a desire to stick with the spirit of the day, I'm just not a fan of hot pepper beers, and though theirs was more subtle than other Jalepeno beers I've sampled before, I went with the Hawaiian Hefeweizen. Pineapple replaced the banana notes of a typical hefewiezen, and I thought it worked quite well.
I'm fortunatel to live in South Central PA where we have world class craft breweries such as Liquid Hero and Crystal Ball here in York, Columbia Kettle Works and Spring House over on the other side of the Susqhehanna River, Troegs and Pizza Boy to the north, and Heavy Season, Union, and Duclaw to the south in Maryland, (all of which are a notch above Mexitaly in the brew category) but none of them will serve you a better in-house made meal with your quality in-house made beer than Mexitaly.
