Yelp removed my review from last year (or the year before), so this one will be brief: there are many options on their menu, making it take a while to decide what to order. For a first visit, unless there is something that you especially like (or do not) consider trying their Puravida smoothie - to go. Prices are on the higher side.

SENT BACK UNCOOKED FOOD, OWNER CALLED POLICE AND THREATENED ME!!!

I went to this restaurant expecting a nice healthy meal. What I got was not only some of the most poorly cooked food I had ever had (actually it was hardly cooked at all), but the absolute worst restaurant experience I had ever had! In fact it was traumatic, and felt like I was on the set of kitchen nightmares. No one should have to endure what I went through. I was served uncooked food, and when I tried to return it, the owner yelled at me, threatened me, and called the police on me. I am not exaggerating! It was insane! But you are probably wondering about the actual story of how it all happened. So I will start from the beginning and share my entire experience.

I was only one of a few tables there, and they were more than adequately staffed. So there is no excuse for bad service. This is one of the places that has pictures of the food on the menu, as it to prove to you that they are serving what they say they are serving. But yet even with the pictures, when I ordered, I did not get what was pictured. I ordered the tortilla soup, and the quesadilla. And what I got, was the most pathetic excuse for these dishes that I could imagine.

When the tortilla soup came, what it really was hot tomato soup poured over a bowl full of tortilla strips, with a little bit of avocado chunks and black beans. It did not look like the picture on the menu, in which the soup contained vegetables like onions and peppers, as tortilla soup should. The soup was bland, and tasted like they had just opened a can of tomato puree and poured it over tortillas. I tried to eat it, but I couldn’t. So I moved on to the quesadilla.
I wrapped my hand around a slice of the quesadilla. The tortilla was warm, but barely cooked at all, the bottom was soggy, and when I lifted it up off the plate it went limp and all of the ingredients fell out. So when I bit into it it was mostly tortilla (again), because all the other ingredients had fallen to the plate. It had not been cooked at all. The cheese was not melted in the slightest. The vegetables and meat were all loose inside of it with nothing holding them together. I tried for another bite but it was useless. It was just a limp soggy tortilla with its insides falling out before I could get it to my mouth. Neither dish was edible. So I called the waiter to send it back.

I showed the waiter my food and politely explained that it was not edible. I asked for something else, and asked him to go and ask the chef which dishes on the menu he was sure he could cook well. The waiter went and asked, and came back with an astonishing answer. “The salad”, he said. “The salad?” I was astonished, and said, “The only thing on the menu he is sure he can cook well is the salad?? That is not even cooking. I came here for cooked food. And you have a chef who cannot cook any of the items on the menu?” The waiter repeated “Yes.” Wow. Can you imagine that? A cook who cannot cook any heated food? I asked to see the manager.

A man came out with an angry look on his face and approached the table like he was ready for a fight. I was taken aback by this. I asked if he was the manager. He said he was the owner and head chef. I could tell he was already on the defensive, and ready to fight, but I was not. so I started by complimenting him on two things I had noticed were nice about the restaurant, to try to start this conversation on the right foot. He didn’t want to hear it though. He said “So whats wrong with the food.” I thought to myself “Uh oh, this guy sounds like he doesn’t really want to hear about it, and is probably just ready to argue.” But there was no way out of the conversation at that point. So I started with the tortilla soup and how it was really just tomato juice and tortillas. He told me that the restaurant had been open for 20 years (which is a lie, I looked it up online, it has only been open for about half that) and that I was the first customer in 20 years to ever complain, and that everyone always loves his food except me (which was also a lie, I looked up online and found tons of complaints). Then he went on to tell me that the problem was with me, and not the food. He said that I didn’t know what tortilla soup was because I was not Mexican, and that that was in fact tortilla soup. And backed this up with his “proof” of the fact that if I look online I will see that no one has ever complained except me (except when I did look online I found that to be a lie.)
I told him calmly I had been living in mexico for a long time, and that I was a chef and specialized in Mexican food, and I did in fact know what tortilla soup was. He said “well this is our way of making it”. I told him that not only did it taste like tomato juice from a can, and had no vegetables on it, but that the picture on the menu indicated that it would be different. He said that the recipe had changed since then, but that it was still tortilla soup and I didn’t know what I was talking about. And so all I could say was “well I cannot eat it, its not appetizing. And it doesn’t look like it did on the menu which is why I ordered it. It doesn’t have any of the ingredients pictured, and that is false advertising, and for that reason I cannot accept this dish.”
By this time he had been arguing with me for about five minutes. Progressively raising his voice, and looming over me angrily. Every other sentence out of his mouth would be “I am not trying to argue with you”, in attempt to make it seem like that was not in fact exactly what he was trying to do. Then he would simply invalidate what I had said by telling me I didn’t know what I was talking about and that this was their version of tortilla soup. Five minutes had passed and he was just standing there arguing, without asking me to replace the tortilla soup with something else. So I said to him “Well do you not want to hear the feedback on the food and why I am sending it back?” He said “Yes I do, and I am not trying to argue with you.” And I said “But you are, you are not listening to my feedback, you are standing there arguing with me and invalidating everything I say. I haven’t even been able to tell you about the quesadilla.” He said “No I am not arguing with you, tell me about the quesadilla.”

So I told him “The quesadilla wasn’t cooked. The bottom is soggy. When I picked it up it was limp and everything fell out of it because it wasn’t cooked at all. The cheese isn’t melted at all. So everything fell out and all I got when I bit it was tortilla.” And what a surprise, he responded with something very similar, but a little worse this time, and more angry. “Well this may not be your way of cooking a quesadilla, it is our way, and that makes it the right way for us in this restaurant. You have come to our restaurant to eat our food, and this is how we make it. And we are an authentic Mexican restaurant, you are not a Mexican chef.” So what could I say? I pleaded with him, “But I couldn’t even eat it, everything fell out, look”, and I showed him what happens when I pick up a slice. Then he got even more arguementative, and then accused me of just trying to argue with him. He said, “Well all you want to do is argue with me. You come here to tell me you don’t like the food and you don’t even give me a chance to fix it, all you do is argue with me.” I said “Excuse me, I’m trying to tell you why I am sending the food back. I came here for a nice meal, and I wanted to have food cooked for me. When I first tried to send this back I had the waiter tell me that the cook could not cook anything, except a salad. And now you come out here to loom over me angrily and argue with me. and you are accusing me of not giving you a chance to fix it when that is all I want. But you haven’t offered to fix it once. Not once have you asked me how to fix it or offered me any other food.”

And guess what? He still didn’t. Instead he lied and then became more accusatory and raised his voice even more and said “I’ve asked you several times to fix it. All you want to do is argue and make trouble! I know your type, you are a trouble maker. You come here to my restaurant to make trouble!” I was astonished. But him saying that he knew my type made me feel like I was not the first person he put in this exact situation. So I thought there was probably no way to resolve it. So I said to him “Look, I didn’t come here to make trouble, I came here to eat. I was served uncooked food. I would like some cooked food. If you are not going to bring me any then we do not need to talk anymore and I need to go.” But what did he do? He continued to yell at me and call me a troublemaker. I looked at my watch. Almost an hour had gone by since I first arrived. He had been arguing and yelling at me for over ten minutes at that point, maybe close to 15. I was starting to feel extremely hungry, and also attacked and uncomfortable. He was putting me in an extremely inappropriate situation. So I gave him an ultimatum. “Ok well I have been here for almost an hour and if you are not going to bring me any cooked food I need to leave. So you can just bring me the check for the drinks that I did drink and I will go.”
He threw up his arms and said “Ok just go! You don’t have to pay for the drinks, just get out of my restaurant.” Shocked, I rushed out. But just as I was out the door he turned to me and said ominously “But don’t tell anyone about this or write any reviews online.” I was surprised he would say such a thing, because it was basically an admission of guilt. He knew that he was wrong, and didn’t want me to tell anyone? So I wanted to clarify. I said “So you mean you don’t want me to tell anyone about what? The way you treated me?” Then he actually blew up and me and became insane and started shouting at me in a rage. “THAT’S IT!!!” He said, “NOW YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING!!! EVEN THE FOOD YOU DIDN”T EAT!!!”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “But you just said I didn’t have to and I could go…I’m already out the door.”
“THAT WAS BEFORE!!!” He shouted. “THINGS HAVE CHANGED!!! YOU ARE A TROUBLE MAKER AND I AM GOING TO MAKE YOU PAY FOR EVERYTHING!!!”

“This isn’t right” I said “I’m not going to pay for what I didn’t eat, that’s wrong”

“NO YOU GET IN THERE AND YOU PAY FOR EVERYTHING!!!” He screamed.

Afraid he was going to physically attack me or do something horrible, I rushed inside. But took out my camera phone to start recording just in case he continued to escalate things and did something bad. I was shaking at that point, so I was fumbling with my phone as I went to the cash register. I told the girl “I am ready to pay for my drinks out there. I only drank drinks though, I did not eat food. So I am only going to pay for the drinks.”

He yelled from behind the counter “NO YOU ARE GOING TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING OR I AM CALLING THE POLICE”. I finally got my camera turned on and started recording, and I said “what did you say? Can you repeat that?” And he ducked down behind the counter so I couldn’t see him. I told the girl “I will pay for the drinks.” And he said to her “Call the police”. And she looked at him confused, as if to make sure he was serious, then looking at me as if to evaluate the threat, and seeing me standing there shaking in my sandals and obviously posing no threat and just trying to pay and leave, she looked back at him questioningly. He reiterated “Call the police!” So she picked up the phone and started dialing, while glancing up at me with a confused and apologetic look, as if to say “I’m sorry, I don’t know why I am doing this, but I have no choice.”

Another manager came up to the register and asked me what was going on. I said “He is attacking me and calling the police on me because I was served uncooked food I don’t want to pay for.” He looked at him, and back at me. Then he said “It’s not legal to record in here”. Not wanting any more trouble, I turned off my phone. As soon as it was off, the owner alerted me to his own recording devices that he was using, and told me about how he was going to use them against me. “But you are on my cameras on here, I have cameras all over this place recording everything. And I am going to have all of my staff members memorize your face, and if you write any reviews about this or tell anyone, we are going to find you and make a lot of trouble for you!” The manager who had just arrived shook his head with disappointed look as if to say “this again?” like he has to deal with the owners bad behavior way too much. Then he said to me “You can go, you don’t have to pay.” I said “Ok thank you” and left promptly, while the owner yelled “Don’t you tell anyone about this!” But I was already going out the door….however I was just in time for…

THE POLICE TO SHOW UP!

But the police in mexico are basically like a swat team. They aren’t like the police in other countries. They are very intimidating. As if this nightmare couldn’t get worse…it felt so surreal. I wondered if I was on the set of a new kitchen nightmares show. But I wasn’t. The police asked me what was going on. I told them I had sent back uncooked food and the owner refused to replace it and wanted me to pay for it, and I thought I should only have to pay for what I ate, so he started yelling at me and called you guys.” The police officer looked at me calmly and nodded his head as if he understood. He did not appear threatening, thank god. He was very tranquil. In fact I finally felt safe now that the police were there.

But then the owner came rushing out. He started ranting and raving to the police, waving his arms in the air. At one point I thought he was going to hit me and I actually had to duck behind the shoulder of a police officer. This man was actually going insane! Thank god the police were there or I would be scared! I am not a fighting type, I am a peaceful person. The police said to him “Tranquilo – Be calm”. Thank god. But he didn’t calm down. Instead he continued to rant to them in Spanish, and then in English he said to me with an evil look in his eye “I am going to study your face on that security camera, and if you make any trouble for this restaurant with reviews online, I am going to find you and make A LOT of trouble for you.” This being a small town, I knew that this was not only possible, but probable. When you live here, you are constantly running into the same people here all the time. In a big city this may not have been a credible threat, but here it was. So I told the police “He is threatening me in English”. And he continued to rant, and so they said to me “Ok you can go”. I thanked them and promptly left, while the owner shouted for me never to return, as if I would have ever thought to.

Mazatlan does have a drug cartel in it (The Sinaloa Cartel). I am not sure if this man is connected to it. It is said that everyone here has an extended family member or knows someone who is in it. So it is very likely that his threat against me was not only credible, but could have involved them. So I felt the need to go to the tourist police and file a report about it. They advised me that though the cartel would probably not come after someone for posting a restaurant review, that this is indeed a town where people do run into the same people a lot, and he could see me out and about in the future, so they advised me not to post any reviews until I had left the city, and that when I did so, to do so under a false pseudonym. And so that is what I have done.
I never felt comfortable in my own city after that. I always had to look over my shoulder while I was out and about. So after a couple months I left. You can see how this was not just a bad restaurant experience. It was horrific, and slightly traumatizing. And for the rest of the day my stomach felt a bit upset due to having eaten the undercooked food. Not only should no one have to endure this type of experience at a restaurant, but places like this should not even be allowed to be in business. So I hope that this review has helped to save some people from having a similar experience. Which looking back, still feels surreal, like a nightmare, rather than real life. But it did indeed happen unfortunately, and hopefully won’t happen to you.
