Incredible! We had a baby shower here today, and every single person at the table was raving about their food. Everything was tasty. Amazing service and the most helpful staff. For creatives and anyone seeking a sanctuary, Abercrombie St.’s Taguan Cafe ticks a lot of boxes. The food is fresh, tasty, comforting and reminiscent of home, especially for Filipinos. But beyond my favourite silogs (beef pares, tapsilog and bangsilog… I’m looking at you) and the best pandesal I’ve had in Sydney, it’s the homey ambience and warmth of the staff that keep me coming back. Whether I’m waiting for my ube latte, mango brew, Magic coffee or Kariton gelato (ube, queso and pandan are my Holy Trinity), the owners and their staff are always happy to chat and check in on their customers. One can’t help but feel looked after. It reminds me of the Japanese concept of omotenashi: a deep and thoughtful sense of hospitality, here expressed through distinctly Filipino-Australian care. I love Taguan so I don’t hesitate to invite friends to join me. I also recently celebrated a milestone birthday in their upstairs space. My family and I had such a great time that I’m already planning my next party there! What gives me further joy whenever I visit is seeing non-Filipinos enjoying our cuisine and culture too. I’ve also attended three successful events at Taguan, including the Filipino artisan-led Bebot Barkada (curated by Magenta House) and promo events for the plays Imelda and Savior. I’m often struck by how Taguan draws collaborative creatives to its abode. Artists are a curious lot, and gatherings like these generate the kind of word of mouth and cultural currency that simply cannot be purchased outright. While taguan itself means “hide and seek”, there is a community here that doesn’t hide its pride in culture, artistry and heritage. And that, perhaps, is the real reason I keep coming back. A must-visit Filipino Café in Redfern! I love the coffee (iced vanilla latte is my fave), all the toasties, and Filipino Adobo - overall, the best Café!!
