Poole's is an absolute must-visit in Raleigh. The space beautifully preserves the nostalgic DNA of an old-school American diner, but spins it into a vibrant, current, and lively atmosphere. It’s one of those rare places that elevates your mood before the food even hits the table! As for the menu, the quality is outstanding. Their famous Macaroni Au Gratin completely lives up to the hype—rich, perfectly baked, and downright spectacular. I also highly recommend the Pimento Cheese with Fried Saltines and the Pan Roasted NC Bass. You can really tell they prioritize fresh, high-quality ingredients; everything from the incredibly fresh salads to the crusty artisanal bread is execution at its finest. The service is attentive, warm, and highly professional. Poole's is versatile enough to be the perfect choice whether you're celebrating a special birthday or just flying solo for dinner after a long day at a conference. If you are looking for an authentic, delicious dining experience with tons of personality in downtown Raleigh, this is it. I’ll definitely be back! (3/5 stars) Unique Experience, but Very Heavy Menu Poole's Diner is definitely something different, though it wasn’t quite my style. I visited tonight and sat at the counter, which offered a cool vibe. I started with the lobster donuts, but honestly, I couldn’t really taste the lobster (I'll upload a picture). Next up was the famous au gratin macaroni—it’s iconic, but it was just a little too heavy for me. For dessert, I tried the strawberry shortcake, but there was nothing traditional about it. It tasted more like a strawberry baklava with a heavy jam consistency and no fresh strawberries. I'll post a picture of that, too. I didn't fully get the hype around the food since everything felt incredibly rich and heavy. That being said, the service was absolutely top-notch. My server, Brittany, was fantastic and even custom-made a strawberry honey lemonade for me that was amazing! Another great perk is the parking setup—there is free parking right across the street with validation. You just have to share your license plate number with the staff when you get inside. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and appreciate the creativity, even if the rich dishes weren't my preference. I would actually go back, but next time I'll definitely pivot toward something a bit lighter, like the roasted chicken, to see how it compares. This is one of those spaces that does half the work before the food even hits the table. It used to be an old-school diner, and a lot of that DNA is still there. The bones feel nostalgic, but the overall vibe is current and lively. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar but still cool. Service Service is where things really clicked. Our server knew the menu inside out and guided us through it with confidence. Every recommendation landed. It also felt like one of those menus where it would be hard to order poorly. The Food The menu leans comfort food with a modern edge, and it’s done really well across the board. We started with a Caesar salad with dill pickle dressing, which sounds like it shouldn’t work but absolutely does. Bright, fresh, and just different enough to be interesting without trying too hard. The beet salad was also excellent, clean flavors and well balanced. Then came the pimento cheese with fried crackers. This might have been the sleeper hit. The crackers are dangerously good. Simple idea, executed perfectly, and hard to stop eating. For mains, the fried chicken was solid but didn’t stand out the same way the starters did. The short rib pot pie, on the other hand, was exactly what you want from a dish like that. Rich, flaky, and deeply comforting. Overall Poole’s is the kind of place where everything feels considered, from the space to the service to the food. It’s approachable, well executed, and very easy to enjoy.
